Car Transport from Bangalore: Carrier Types, Documents and Checklist
Moving from Bangalore to another city and want your car to reach safely? Driving it yourself across hundreds of kilometres means long days on the road, fuel, tolls and extra wear on the car. Professional car transport ships your car on a carrier, so you can travel separately and receive it at your new address. Here is what you need to know.
Open carrier or enclosed carrier?
- Open car carrier — several cars travel together on a two-level truck. This is the most common and affordable option, and works well for most everyday cars.
- Enclosed carrier — the car travels inside a closed container, protected from dust, rain and road debris. It costs more but is a good choice for new, premium or vintage cars.
Documents to keep ready
- Copy of the car’s RC (Registration Certificate)
- Copy of a valid car insurance policy
- Your ID proof and address proof
- Valid PUC certificate
Keep the original documents with you rather than inside the car.
How to prepare your car
- Wash the car so existing scratches and dents are easy to see.
- Take photos and a video from all sides, and note the odometer reading.
- Remove valuables and loose items, including chargers, music systems that detach, and anything in the boot.
- Keep only a little fuel in the tank.
- Check tyres and battery so the car can be driven on and off the carrier easily.
- Fold or retract mirrors and antennas where possible.
The inspection report
At pickup, the transporter should inspect the car and record its condition, existing marks and odometer reading on an inspection report. Read it carefully, sign it and keep a copy. At delivery, check the car against this report and your photos before you sign the delivery receipt.
Transit insurance
Ask what the transit insurance covers, the declared value of the car and how claims are handled. Get these details in writing before handing over the keys.
Moving to another state permanently?
If you are shifting to another state for good, your car will generally need to be re-registered there within 12 months, which involves an NOC from the Bangalore RTO. Eligible employees may also consider BH (Bharat) series registration. Check the latest rules with the RTO before your move.
